Recently a number of members received text messages claiming to be from Genesee Co-op from a 585 number, saying they had made a fraudulent purchase. We will not send texts asking you to give us information or to call a number other than the main credit union line and we will NEVER ask you to take money out of the credit union to "protect it from fraud". If you ever need to reach the fraud center overnight please call our main 585-461-2230 number and press 8 or call the number on the voicemail. Note in the image above--that is not our phone number or our website--beware!
Scammers have become very sophisticated—and text message scams are on the rise. These scams often look like urgent alerts from us or another institution, claiming there’s suspicious activity or asking you to verify your account. The goal? To trick you into sharing personal information like account numbers, passwords, or PINs.
How to Spot a Scam
- Unexpected messages: Genesee Co-op and other institutions will not ask for sensitive details via text.
- Links to unknown sites: Fraudsters use fake websites that look real or will ask you to call them back at a number that is not Genesee Co-op's number.
- Urgent language: Phrases like “Act now!” or “Your account will be locked” are red flags.
What to Do
- Don’t click links or reply. Contact your bank directly using official channels.
- Report the message. Forward it to your carrier’s spam reporting number (usually 7726).
- Enable alerts. Use your bank’s official app for secure notifications.
Protecting your financial information starts with staying alert. If something feels off, trust your instincts—pause before you click--and please call us directly at 585-461-2230 to speak with anyone on our team, especially someone you are familiar with, before you take any action or share your information.
